South Beach's Hotel Bars Went Dark This Summer, and Its Street-Front Favorites Came Back

Balan's opened its first U.S. location on Lincoln Road in 1997. About five years ago, its owners, Jonathan and Keva Balan, replaced it with Issabella's, a Mediterranean restaurant at the same address, 1022 Lincoln Road. On September 17 they brought the original back. Issabella's served its last meal on August 30, and Balan's came back with daily brunch, an international dinner menu, a happy hour every day of the week and new sunset and patio programming, according to Miami New Times. The Miami Herald reported the same handoff.

That return came near the end of what Miami New Times called Miami's "brutal summer of restaurant closures." Three of the best-known Miami Beach losses trace back to the hotels that housed them. In each case the building's plans changed and the bar or restaurant inside had to leave. The places that came back this fall have their own street entrances.

Three Hotel Venues, One Problem

Taquiza went first. Its taqueria at 7450 Ocean Terrace served its last tacos on July 31. New Times reported that the closure came as The Broadmoor Miami Beach hotel, Taquiza's home since 2018, got ready to start construction on the Ocean Terrace development project. Days later, Taquiza reopened inside its longtime commissary and tortilla factory at 8246 NE Second Avenue in Little River, off the island.

Medium Cool closed on August 22. The underground bar at the Gale Hotel, 1690 Collins Avenue, had poured cocktails, spun vinyl and hosted live jazz since 2023, and New Times had it on its Top 50 Bars list for 2026. New Times reported that the closing came from "a change in the hotel's plans." Co-founders Dan Binkiewicz and Joshua Wagner are looking for a new Miami home for the bar.

Las' Lap opened in August 2025 inside the Daydrift hotel at 2216 Park Avenue. It was the second location of the Lower East Side bar, with chef Kwame Onwuachi overseeing a West Indian and Afro-Caribbean menu. It closed on June 28, planning to reopen in September. The team then told Miami New Times why that plan fell through:

"Unfortunately, six weeks ago, we learned the hotel was being sold and that the prospective new ownership intended to completely gut and reimagine the space. Since then, we have been left in limbo."

When New Times followed up on September 11, Las' Lap still had no new location and no reopening date. A restaurant inside a hotel doesn't control its own lease. If the property changes hands or gets repositioned, even a successful tenant can lose its space.

The Ones That Came Back Have Their Own Front Doors

The comebacks started in August, at street level. Stormy Monday, at 820 Alton Road, was supposed to be a five-month pop-up. Instead it became a permanent bar and reopened on August 6 with a refreshed menu and lower cocktail prices. New Times noted one perk for a Miami Beach August: $5 Dark and Stormys whenever it rains.

On Park Avenue, Casa Rassi made the same move from pop-up to permanent shop. The locally grown specialty coffee café made New Times' list of August's new Miami openings. The same roundup listed Sulta Rosa as open at 821 Lincoln Road, a few doors from where Ukiyo is building out.

Balan's came back in September. All three grew or returned during the same months the hotel venues were closing.

Venue Address What happened Date
Taquiza 7450 Ocean Ter., in The Broadmoor Left as the hotel prepared for construction; reopened in Little River Last day July 31

Balan's 1022 Lincoln Rd. Returned to its original address September 17

The Closings With No Reported Hotel Link

Several other closings this fall had no hotel connection in the reporting, and they belong in the record too.

La Grande Boucherie at 81 Washington Avenue called its summer closure a "brief seasonal pause," as New Times reported. Like Las' Lap, it opened on the Beach in 2025 as a New York import. As of New Times' September 11 update, it hadn't given a reopening date or said whether it would be back before Miami Spice ended on September 30. The sources we reviewed show no reopening date since then.

On September 30, New Times reported two more closings. Tambourine Room by Tristan Brandt, at 6801 Collins Avenue in North Beach, closed that day. Tropezón, at 512 Española Way, served its last dinner on Saturday, October 3.

North Beach also had a move. The Love Loaf's last day at 7415 Collins Avenue was September 30. Its owner plans to reopen a few blocks south at 7337 Collins Avenue in the first half of 2027.

October's Openings, and Two That Bet on Hotels Again

Most of the announced fall openings are in central South Beach, the same stretch where Balan's and Sulta Rosa reopened. As of October 12, none of the October openings below has a confirmed opening day.

  • Ukiyo, 818 Lincoln Road. Conveyor-belt sushi in a 7,431-square-foot restaurant, which New Times expected to open in mid-October. The restaurant's own website says "Opening October 2026" and says reservations will open before the doors do.
  • Royale Pizza Napoletana, 1680 Meridian Avenue. New Times has called it Florida's first Tokyo-style Neapolitan pizzeria. It's slated for October 2026.
  • Zebra Club, 150 20th Street. An intimate restaurant and bar opening beneath the Townhouse Hotel, announced for October. The team includes chef Michelle Bernstein, Naren Young, David Martinez and Dan Binkiewicz, who co-founded Medium Cool. Its website still says "Coming Soon."
  • Luca Trattoria, 933 Normandy Drive. Coming to North Beach this fall, with no day announced.

The biggest hotel opening is in Mid-Beach. José Andrés is bringing Bazaar Meat back to Miami Beach at the newly reimagined Andaz, 4041 Collins Avenue, with an announced opening of October 22. This one comes from the hotel's own reinvestment, with the Andaz building its renovation around a major restaurant. Zebra Club and Bazaar Meat both show that operators are still opening inside hotels this fall.

Where to Eat This Month

Several of these addresses line up with this month's free and ticketed events, so you can plan dinner around them.

  1. October 15, North Beach Social. Les Greene & The Swayzees play a free show at the Miami Beach Bandshell at 7:30 p.m., part of the monthly North Beach Social series and Culture Crawl. The Bandshell is in North Beach, near Normandy Drive, where Luca Trattoria is expected.
  2. October 21 to 24, South Beach Seafood Festival. Dinners, a chef competition and the Saturday Seafood Slam tasting at Lummus Park. The festival's first two days fall around Bazaar Meat's announced October 22 opening up Collins in Mid-Beach.
  3. October 25, Festival de Bomba y Plena. A free evening of Afro-Puerto Rican music, dance, cultural demonstrations and artisan vendors at the Miami Beach Bandshell. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the show starts at 5 p.m.
  4. October 31, Lincoln Road Halloween Block Party. Trick-or-treating and crafts for kids, then an evening street party with live performers and DJs. Balan's at 1022 Lincoln Road and Sulta Rosa at 821 Lincoln Road are both on the route. Ukiyo at 818 Lincoln Road may be open by then.

Before planning around Ukiyo, Royale or Zebra Club, check that they've actually opened. A listing that just says "October" doesn't prove a restaurant has opened. La Grande Boucherie and Las' Lap are in the same position. Until either one announces a date, treat both as closed.

Restaurant news also tells you something about the buildings on a block, including which ones are changing hands or being reworked. If you own on the Beach and want to know what this fall's changes on Lincoln Road, Alton Road and Collins Avenue could mean for your home, the Ramona Bautista Team can put together a complimentary home valuation, in English or Spanish, based on what's opening and closing near your address.
